DubVision, two brothers from the Netherlands, have been called breakthrough 2012 by Axwell and after their tracks “All By MySelf” and their remix on “Committed to Sparkle Motion” on Axtone, we thought it’s finally time to talk to the guys and get more info on how they started, their styles and their goals in the future.

toblip.com: Hey guys, hope you are good. 2012 has been quite a good year so far for your remix. Your “Commited to Sparkle Motion” remix has been out for almost 2 weeks and with tracks like “All By Myself” and “You and I”, you’ve gotten a lot of attention. But there are still some people that don’t know you, please introduce yourself.

DubVision: Hi, we are Stephan (30) and Victor Leicher (23), we’re Dutch and live in The Haque, Holland, and are dedicated to music.

toblip.com: So you guys are brothers with an age gap of 8 years. Was music a typcial hobby that you shared? How did you start working together?

DubVision: When we were younger, our parents made us play at least one instrument. We both played approximately 7 years, from classical to jazz and from blues to funk. At an early age, Victor started experimenting with electronic music, using all sorts of computer programs. It was all self education. After seeing him producing some good music, Stephan got interested and decided to team up. This was such a success that we started producing music on a daily basis. After a while we came up with the name: DubVision.

toblip.com: As said, 2012 is a good year for you and Axwell himself titled you as breakthrough 2012 in his djmag comment. What can we expect next from you? Do you already have new material in the pipeline for Axtone or other labels?

DubVision: Axwell has been our inspiration, our hero when it comes to perfectly melodic progressive house so the fact that he of all DJs/Producers picks US as his favorite, is truly amazing. We have some stuff done and stuff we are still working on including some remixes and collabartions with some intresting names (and for some interesting labels) which we can’t share yet, unfortunately. We really put a lot of work and time in our tracks. So for us it’s more about quality than quantity. The idea is to keep making progress on our skills and release some good tunes next year then the rest will follow.

toblip.com: If we do some research on the web and listen to some of your records, DubVision are associated with big room house. Do you agree with that or is there another way would you describe your sound? Are there sometimes differences between the music you produce and the sound you play?

DubVision: We guess big room is the best way to call it. We are big fans of melody in our productions, especially emotional and kind of dramatic melodies. We like to take people on a journey with our music. That and a certain strong ‘chord’ combination makes a typical DubVIsion track. When we play out we strive to play the same sound but also add some rougher and groovier stuff. Also we like to do a lot off mashups to combine those aspects of music.

toblip.com: ADE is over. Have you been there and what do you think about the progress this whole event has made?

DubVision: Yeah we’ve been there although just for one day. We were at the Spinnin’ night and after that we saw Sander van Doorn show at Escape. ADE made some pretty big progress over the last couple of years. It’s one of the most important gatherings in the dance industry and we are lucky to have it in Holland. We have been going to ADE for a couple of years now and we always learn new stuff or meet interesting people!

toblip.com: I saw the video of your gig at Biergarten in Palmero, which seemed to be a phat party. What was your best gig so far and what made it that special?

DubVision: To be perfectly honest, we haven’t play that many places to give a fair answer. Ask us in a year and we will give you a better answer!

toblip.com: Where would you like to play? Is there a festival or a special club which is on your to-do list?

DubVision: There are a lot of clubs and festivals on our list. We would love to perform at Ultra fest or Tomorrowland for example and clubs like LIV and TAO.

toblip.com: Is there something you guys definitely need from home when you are heading to a gig (no equipment)? For example Thomas Gold always takes some coffee with him.

DubVision: We always bring a USB fan. It plugs into your laptop and keeps a nice little breeze.

toblip.com: One of our standard questions is what producers think about how the electronic music scene has changed, so what is you opinion on that especially when it comes to the US market.

DubVision: EDM made unbelievable growth in the last couple of years but is was pretty obvious it was going to happen. It has two sides. On one hand it’s a very good thing because more people are introduced to dance music and it gets the attention it deserves. On the other hand it’s getting a little bit out of hand and there is a risk it will be played out in a couple of years.

toblip.com: Whats your opinion on dj polls like the DJ Mag Top 100? Especially when you take a look at the results… in our opinion some things seem pretty weird.

DubVision: To be honest, we haven’t been really paying attention to the Dj Mag Top 100. It seems to be a popularity contest. But that doesn’t make the dj’s in there less admirable. We hope to be in there some day!

toblip.com: Logic or Ableton? Analog or digital stuff? What is necessary for a DubVision production and with what kind of tools would you like to work?

DubVision: We use Ableton and a lot of third party plugins. Not that much analog stuff although we would love to expand our studio with some nice analog synths our compressors/eq’s etc. We use the standard VSTs like Sylenth, Massive etc but we are always on the lookout for new intresting plugins, be it fx or sytnhs.

toblip.com: Is there a typical method you start when working on a track or is it just starting to play with some VSTs and sharing some ideas and arguing about making it better?

DubVision: It depends. Usually we start on finding melodies and our chord progressions. Then we work them out. But sometimes we start with a beat or a interesting sample that inspires us.

toblip.com: Do you have a dream when it comes to collaborating with other artists and is there an artist or a band which you really would love to remix?

DubVision: We would love to do a collab with Axwell, as explained he is our favorite producer. But we also like working with bands like we did with Discopolis. It’s amazing to combine our big room style with these kind of subtle, emotional vocals and guitar lines.

toblip.com: Let us know your top 5 all time classics

1. Booka Shade – Body language
We’ve been editing and re-editing this track so much. It’s really funky and sexy, it never gets old!

2. Together – Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso
This track started it for us. These sound combinations as well as the vocals are so catchy and very different from all the house tracks at that time. A classic track that we often play in sets as original and mashed up.

3. Daft Punk – Around the World
Daft Punk are the forefathers to us when it comes to electric music. Their beats and sounds are so funky and groovy that they are one of the biggest inspirations for us still. Their live shows are truly amazing. We like all their work, but if we have to choose a favorite it’s ‘Around the World’. Wherever you play this song, the crowd goes mad!

4. Starkillers ft Alex Kenji and Nadia Ali – Pressure (Alesso Remix)
‘The’ track of 2011! The drive and clear production of this track is amazing. Also the melody is very uplifting and a little dramatic at the same time. Super drops and massive build ups!

5. Michael Jackson – Beat It

King of pop, legend, hero. There are so many awesome tracks, but this one has such an amazing drum and rhythm choice. There is always something from Michael on our iPod.

One of Germany’s hottest exports, Moguai, recently dropped his second artist album “Mpire” on deadmau5 label mau5trap. He is touring around the world almost non stop and in the last couple of years his name really has become pretty big in the industry and therefore we thought it would be ace feature him in an interview!

toblip.com: Hey Moguai, thanks a lot for doing this interview. You are into music for a long time and of course a lot of people do know you, but please introduce yourself for those who don’t know you yet.

Moguai: My name is André Tegeler, currently living in Recklinghausen / Germany but will move to Berlin in the near future. I dj and produce music since the early nineties, and have released my second artist album this January.

toblip.com: You have been doing a lot of things in your career and after some ace releases like “Nyce/Blau” or “Oyster” on mau5trap you released your first album “We R Lvye” on Deadmau5 label. How was it to release tracks and the album on deadmau5 label for you as he has become a really big name in the industry?

Moguai: For me and my music it´s fantastic! The team behind this label is doing a really great job, and the whole world puts a focus on this label, so you are guaranteed the most possible exposure. After years of making music I decided to make a cut a few years ago, relocating the studio into my cellar, and to start from scratch. For the music I produced then, mau5trap was the only musical platform that would put the music into the right context, and of course it was not only the first choice, but the only one, when it came to my debut album.

toblip.com: Let’s talk about your album “Mpire”. The sametitled single is out since the 16th January and the whole album are out now and in our opinion very very good. What do you think about your album and how would you describe it?

Moguai: Compared to my first album, which was more of a “listening album”, Mpire is much more club focused, but without repeating the same sounds and patterns over and over again. I guess it has a nice mixture of melodies and beats, which grows until the middle of the album, and then sets you into a more relaxed mood onto the end. Just like a good DJ Set ;)

toblip.com: We noticed that you have been on tour almost non-stop around Christmas and after a few days off you are doing a tour in the US to promote your album/sound. How do you think about the US market and if there is a difference what is it between the US and the European crowd?

Moguai: Haha, I get asked this question almost in every interview, but yes, there is a difference between the US and Europe. For me it feels like the US & Canada have that vibe and enthusiasm for EDM now, we had in Europe in the middle of the nineties, when everything was new and fresh for us. The people there are very openminded there, I always give this example, but it describes the spirit there pretty good: It´s not a big deal in the States when Skrillex plays on the main stage of a huge festival right after Armin van Buuren, that wouldn´t be possible in Europe where most people think in categories.

toblip.com: Besides the tour you now have your own radio show on Sirius XM and you are back on 1 Live as far as I know. Do you make differences between both shows when it comes to the sound?

Moguai: The show at Sirius XM was a special feature. The guys there heard about my second album and asked me if I would be interested in a 4 show special leading towards the album. I had great feedback on this feature, and maybe there will be a regular show on Sirius XM someday.. who knows ;) But you are right with the 1LIVE show, the concept has slightly changed at the beginning of the year. Now I´m the host for 60min every week, playing from 00-01 AM, and then having guestmixes from the likes of Digitalism or Avicii.

toblip.com: The progress of Electronic Dance Music is really huge, especially in the US. How do you think about that and where will house be in like 5 years? Will it still be that hyped or do you think that there will be a depression?

Moguai: That´s really hard to predict, I don´t think that the hype will stop in the next couple of years. Dance Music has always managed to recreate itself, and with the tons of young and gifted talents out there I´m not afraid this will stop ;)

toblip.com: You are still doing a lot of gigs in Germany but it seems that the big names can’t be paid by the promoters anymore. How you do you think about that?

Moguai: Germany is a difficult market for EDM, because compared to other countries, people are used to it for several decades now. But I think that the public awareness of EDM changes right now from being a “DJ Thing” in small Clubs to a big “Concert Thing” on Festivals, so you´ll possibly hear more international big names here in the future as well.

toblip.com: You seem to be pretty open for new equipment and set solutions. We’ve seen you playing with 2 iPads when beatport streamed your set from their Berlin office. What gear is – in your opinion – the best to play a set.

Moguai: It really depends on what you want, or what you feel comfortable with. Pioneer and Native Instruments are producing incredible products, but the possibilities are almost endless, and can be adjusted to your needs. For me right now it´s playing with the two iPads controlling Ableton Live on my Laptop, but this might change in the future as well. The technical progress is crazy in these days.

toblip.com: Talking about equipment. What kind of software and hardware do you use for productions/which do you think are necessary for your work?

Moguai: When I started to play my shows with Ableton Live, I switched from Logic to Live in the studio as well… which made more sense for me, but like the DJ gear it depends on your own workflow, and needs. So it´s Ableton Live as the DAW, and as VSTs I often use the Sylenth1, NI Massive and NI Maschine.

toblip.com: What kind of influences do you have and what are your goals when you are producing a track?

Moguai: I usually don´t have a certain goal in mind when I start a track. Sometimes it starts with a melody, or a beat, sometimes it´s just a sound or vocal chop.

toblip.com: Of course your career will not end fast and we wish you a lot of success with your upcoming album but what are your plans after your career?

Moguai: I haven´t really thought of that, because right now I just love what I´m doing.. but I don´t think I can stop creating music ;)

toblip.com: What are your recent Top 5 and your all time classics?

Moguai: Alltime Favs:
Ken Ishii – Extra
New Order – Blue Monday
CJ Bolland – Camargue
Underworld – Rez
Kraftwerk – Computerliebe

Current Top5:
Wolfgang Gartner – There and back
Michael Woods – Full Access
Moguai – Lyme
Deadmau5 – Maths

toblip.com: Thanks for the interview and I hope you will be back in Braunschweig this year as it is my hometown ;-) Btw. BVB rocks ;-)

Moguai: You’re welcome, we´ll see us in Braunschweig ;) (And no, “it” doesn´t rock!)

More than 8 months have passed since the last interview here. We are really sorry about that but we try to get more good interviews for you so you don’t have to wait that long again :)

This time we focussed on two talented guys from the Netherlands who recently had some really good releases out there so we thought it would be nice to feature Disfunktion on toblip.com.

1) toblip.com: Hey guys, first of all please introduce yourself for our readers :)

Hi everybody, we are Barteld Frech and Mike Tielemans, two guys from The Netherlands, producing and dj’ing together as Disfunktion.

2) toblip.com: How long are you into music production right now and when have you decided to make music? Did you maybe learn to play an instrument when you were children?

We have been friends for almost 15 years now. We started out playing at school parties and local bars for fun and beers. Only a few years ago we started messing around with Ableton Live, also just for fun. We were totally new to this, so we started with sampling discosongs. We were (and still are) a big fan of Olav Basoski’s tracks and remixes. So during that period we made a lot of filterdiscostuff. When we listen to it now it’s very bad hahaha. But one track just worked for us and luckily for Olav as well, cause he signed it to his label Rootz (although he totally did the mastering and Eq’ing, it needed that for sure haha, thanks O ;-)).

We were also in the process of finding a style and technique we felt comfortable with! Since more than a year or so we are really happy with our sound and productions. We switched to Logic and some external stuff and everything fell into place!

3) toblip.com: While checking out your soundcloud to find out more tracks you have done I actually found out that you can do a variety of tracks. Your remix of “Myth” by Hard Rock Sofa btw. is a bit harder, “Snooki” is a trancy track and “Lost all the way” is an amazing progressive house track. Do you have a favourite genre or is it more that and idea comes to your mind and you just start and don’t think about how it turns out?

We just start with a hook in Logic, which sometimes is very bigroom trancy and sometimes is really clubby and melodic. We just go from there and see how it works out. Sometimes it turns in something completely different :). We like a lot of styles, as long as it has a good melody and a nice drop. Luckily we are signed to PinkStar Records, they are open to a lot of our ideas.

We produce with a certain set of kicks, hats etc etc, which we sculped in the last year. So even if the styles are different we hope there still is some sort of red line in our latest work.

4) toblip.com: Of course you did some track with vocals like “In The Sunshine” with Max C, “Lost all the way” or your latest track “Chasing the clouds”. How do you think about vocals? Do they support the vibe of a track you want to spread or do you think that they are sometimes just necessary to make a track sound more finished and complete?

Good question! We love vocals, but they do change the instrumental we made in something totally new, which is a good thing, but it takes some getting used to in some situations. Vocals do give your track a whole new vibe. It’s awesome to see what a vocalist adds to a track. We have some stuff like Chasing Clouds and Lost All The Ways coming up! Also, we have a new track with Max’C which is amazing! His voice brings the track to a whole new level :)

5) toblip.com: Some weeks ago I found this “Avicii” track on youtube and I found out that it was just one of those fake uploads. The track now has more than 3 million views and actually it is “Galette” which is a production you made. Is that something positive for you that a lot of people might like it or do you dislike it as your work was “wrong” promoted by titling it as an Avicii track?

Yeah haha, this is soo strange. First off, it’s offcourse always an honor when your productions get compared to Avicii! When Galette came out someone apparently renamed it to Avicii – Hello Miami and then it spread really quickly. This video you mentioned has over 3.000.000 views!! That is amazing! We see this as a good thing, because luckily a lot of comments are by people who know this is actually Galette. But also a LOT of people comment : Avicii is a legend, great track! And others: Galette and Hello Miami are different tracks. Hahaha…

So hopefully this video will introduce a new group of people to Disfunktion and discover our music.

6)toblip.com: Can you tell us something about your upcoming tracks? On what kind of tracks are you working on at the moment and when will they be out (if already planned)?

At the moment we are spending a lot of time in the studio! We have around 20 tracks or so waiting for release. These tracks are in the style of our recent tracks, so a lot of piano’s, some vocals and also a lot of harder stuff! We are working on an album (to be released on PinkStar somewhere in the new year, more info soon) As mentioned earlier there will be a massive new release coming up with Max’C in the beginning of 2012!

7) toblip.com: Talking about your work with what kind of equipment do you work? Any favourite software or plug-ins you think that are necessary for the hardworking and upcoming producers out there?

As we mentioned, we made the switch to Logic. So we use Logic’s plugins. We are big fans of Sylenth1, Nexus, KorgM1, Sampletank for making melodies. For sculpting the sounds we use some Waves plugins and a lot of Logic EQ’ing. Other great plugins are BBE Sonic Maximizer, QuikQuak Reverb and SPL Vitalizer. These clean up the sound a lot.

And we also invested in some hardware, we use the SSL XLogic BusCompressor in our Master Chain.

8) toblip.com: Besides producing you are also deejaying. What was your best experience so far? Do you have a resident club and where would you like to play?

Last year we went to the Miami Winter Music Conference for the first time, which was just amazing! We played at a couple of venues including a very nice poolparty at a luxurious hotel right off the miami beachfront. It’s just so cool to see people in the U.S. going crazy over your productions, especially while you’re in the miami sunshine during your gig. The best gig however must have been Nikki Beach Miami that same week. We spent all day there, and ended up doing a 2,5 hour set and finishing the party. Just amazing to get so much love from the crowd!

We don’t have a resident club anywhere, but we’ll be in Switzerland in january, in Sweden in february and we’ve allready confirmed Nikki Beach Miami in march! We’re looking forward to this a lot!

Disfunktion – Snooki

9) toblip.com: The electronic dance music scene is growing and growing. DJs are – somehow – the new rockstars e.g. Swedish House Mafia who just played at Madison Square Garden. What do you think about the development and what do you think will happen to EDM in the future?

We feel that the the dj/rockstars like SHM are just killing it on so many levels. We’ve playing out stuff from Steve Angello and Axwell from back when they made disco/funk records. To see where they took EDM in the last couple of years is just impressive, to say the least. Tiesto recently even came out with his own clothing line!

We hope that EDM will continue to grow and take advantage of the respect that everyone has for the style of music. We’ve known this music is awesome for quite some time, it’s just nice to see the rest of the world is coming to that conclusion also!

10) toblip.com: As the year is almost over what are your goals or your intentions for 2012?

We hope to gain more fans, get more gigs and sell more records! We’ve got so much tracks, remixes and bootlegs coming out in the next couple of months, including our upcoming album. We feel very positive about the coming year and are looking forward to it a lot!

11) Last but not least. What are your top 5 favourite at the moment and your top 5 all time classics.

At the moment:

1. Annie Lennox – Little Bird (Disfunktion Bootleg)

2. EDX – Give It Up For Love

3. Avicii – Levels

4. Nicky Romero – Toulouse

5. LKID – 50.000 Watts

Classics:

1. Daft Punk – One More Time

2. Energy 52 – Cafe Del Mar

3. Jaydee – Plastic Dreams

4. Armand van Helden – Funk Phenomena

5. Chicane – Saltwater

I thought it would be pretty nice to do a different interview this time, so I asked one of, in my opinion, the best voices in house music for doing this. It’s no one else than Max’C who is recently back on fire and is the man behind the vocals of the legendary “I Found You” by Axwell. I hope you enjoy it and if you would like to see interviews with other artists just send me suggestions to info@toblip.com.

toblip.com: Hey Charles. Thanks for hooking up with me for doing this interview. You’re one of the most memorable and, in my opinion, best voices in house music and I guess after “I Found You” with Axwell most of house music lovers know you but please give us a short introduction

Max’C: Hi Tobias, my name is Charles Salter aka Max´C and I originally hail from Louisville “Dirty South”, Kentucky and now based in Helsinki, Finland.

toblip.com: You’re into house music for a long time now but I guess most of my readers or most of the house music fans don’t know that you did a huge step back a while and moved to Finland from the US. How did that come?

Max’C: I´ve been into the House Music scene since 1990, but my musically background is deeply rooted in Gospel, Soul, Jazz and R&B. In 84′, I was contracted to teach Dance in Finland and became the first person to teach HipHop/Poppping/Locking/Bboying at the Helsinki Dance Academy.

toblip.com: I read that you also did a solo album and of course you were not always into house and electronic music. How did the connection to house music start and what is electronic music for you?

Max’C: I was an R&B/Soul Singer before I got into House and Electronic music. My Mother’s family are all Gospel Singers, my oldest Brother is a Gospel Singer in the US. I’ve done 4 Albums:

1st: She She Sam (Look What We Started) 1986
2nd: 3rd Nation (One Nation) 1990
3rd: 3rd Nation (Close Encounters Of The 3rd Kind) 1994,
4th: Max´C (Passin’ Tyme) 2004

In 1993, I was the lead singer of Helsinki based trio called “3rd Nation” with UK born musician James Black and Finn Kari Kaivola, we sent our demos to hit producer at that time, Stone Bridge (Sweden) heard our tunes and went crazy for us. So we ended up signing with SweMix Productions in 92-93. Our first Single was “Stand Up” that was released in the UK under Champion Music.
Our second release became a Smash Hit in the American Billboard Hot 100 Singles Charts at #8 “I Believe” and 3rd Single, cover tune from Jody Watley “Real Love”.

House music for me started back in the late 80′s. Chicago House is what I liked, it had to have the Soul in it. That’s what’s missing in today’s House Music – Soul!

toblip.com: “I Found You” with Axwell was probably your biggest success, is it also personally your biggest success in your career/life r what was maybe the best decision you made?

Max’C: I’ve had lots of successful songs in my Career, but “I Found U” is definitely one of my biggest tunes, but certainly not the last ;)

toblip.com: Last year your track with Max Vangeli “Look into your heart”, especially the remix by Carl Louis and Martin Danielle Remix, was a huge record for me and nowadays there are a lot of new tracks featuring coming up like “One For Me” with James Talk and Ridney or “Flashing Lights” with Jerome Isma-Ae and Daniel Portman. What else can we expect? I heard you’re also working on new material with Heikki L.

Max’C: Tobias, I´ve got so much material out there and it´s hard to remember all the Producer/DJ’s I’m working with at the moment, but yes, Hidden Sound, Prok & Fitch, Nari & Milani, Cristian Marchi, Heikki L, DJ Smash, Kimble K, Per Ox, Laidback Luke, Disfunktion, Dj Bream, David Ventta, Roger Sanchez, Chris Kaeser, Mikael Weermets and just so many more.

toblip.com: How does a typical collaboration work out? Do you have some ideas and send the lyrics to the producers or is it just the normal way that they contact you if they have a beat?

Max’C: The DJ’s normally contact me and ask if we could make a collaboration and I tell them to send me their music back and info on who they are so I can do some research on who they are and what they’ve done. Once that´s done, If I like what I’ve read about the Producer and the tune, I see if I can come up with something lyrically and melody wise.

Axwell – I Found You from Victor Carvalho on Vimeo.

toblip.com: What are your influences when you’re writing lyrics and with who you really like to do a collaboration?

Max’C: I don’t really have influences when it comes to writing. It’s all in the way the tune makes me feel when I hear it. I write my tune based on the feeling I get from it, but most of my ideas are based on real songs. What I mean is, most songs today just has one or two phazes that repeat through whole tune. I write stories, stuff that people can really feel and relate to. That’s why writers like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye’s songs last forever, cause they are real songs about real shit, real feelings and not just “put your hands in the air”. I wanna collab with the best DJ’s out there, cause my vocal and lyrics bring the magic to their intrumental…

toblip.com: Tell me your current and your all time top 5 tracks, no matter which genre.

Max’C: House – Show Me Love (Robin S & StoneBridge)
R&B – Without U (Charlie Wilson)
Pop – Rock With You (Michael Jackson)
Soul – All I Do (Stevie Wonder)
Rock – I´ll Be Over You (Toto)

“The Moment” by Tim Mason received a lot of attention during the last months. At first everybody thought that it could be the upcoming Swedish House Mafia single or a new Steve Angello track, but after a few weeks have passed it was announced as a single by an unknown guy from the UK called Tim Mason.

Now “The Moment” has been supported by a couple of djs like DirtySouth, Axwell, Steve Angello or Tiesto and it also was broadcasted on the last Pete Tong show on BBC Radio 1. The single will be out through Steve Angello‘s label SIZE Records on the 6th April and I thought it would be a pretty good idea to do a short introduction of him.

I hope you enjoy this little interview!

toblip.com: Hey Tim. Most of the electronic dance music fans were kinda surprised when it became official that „The Moment“ was done by you and not – like expected – by Swedish House Mafia or Steve Angello. You’re quite unknown so I would like you to introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you, your life and your music.

Tim Mason: I am Tim Mason, and I live for the music. :)

toblip.com: „The Moment“ is signed to SIZE, Steve Angello’s label, how did that work out? Did you meet him before or was a like a real promo track which you’ve send to him?

Tim Mason: I sent The Moment to Steve Angelo through my Manager. It wasnt even a promo yet, it was just a finished recording straight from the studio. It wasn’t even mastered. He heard it and loved it! I never met Steve Angello and still haven’t yet, but I am sure I will soon.

toblip.com: You’re a newcomer to the business. What else can we expect from you this year? Are their any other tracks which are already signed to a label and which maybe are scheduled or are you just working on new tracks?

Tim Mason: I am currently working on new tracks, and very much looking forward to seeing the progression as the year goes by. I have already done some huge remixes too, so looking forward to them being released.

toblip.com: How did you become a producer? Was music already an important hobby for you and you played instruments or did you just like electronic music and were curious about how to make your own tracks?

Tim Mason: I was always into electronic music from a young age. I started djing from the age of 13. It was when I heard the Rhythm Masters remix of Todd Terry’s „Keep On Jumping“ that I was inspired to get into production. In that period I was already learning the piano, so it was quite natural for me to start making my own tracks.

toblip.com: What are your influences? Who’s your biggest dj/producer?

Tim Mason: My influences are DJ Sneak , Jaque La Conte , Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk and many others. Too many to mention! :)

toblip.com: Your goals for 2011 are?

Tim Mason: My goals for 2011 are to release more singles, to grow as a Dj, and to enjoy the crowds around the world enjoying the music I play.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-t06dZ7Wlk

toblip.com: Are you more the production guy who’s also deejaying or more the typcial dj? How would you describe a typical Tim Mason set?

Tim Mason: I am more a producer / Dj. I always believe that the records you release are very important…Djing comes from the records you produce. I‘ve been djing since I was 13 years old, so there is plenty of experience there! ;)

toblip.com: What do you use for productions? Any favourite plugins?

Tim Mason: I use a mixture of hardware and software. I love my Nord Lead, and it’s always good to have a couple of proper outboard compressors, but then the Waves stuff is awesome! One of my fave must be Massive!

toblip.com: Your favourite all time track and your recents top 5 are?

Tim Mason: Stardust – Music Sounds Better With You is one of my all time fave’s.
Current top 5 are:
Steve Angello & Alex Metric – Open Your Eyes
South Central – Day I Die (Rhythm Masters Remix)
Matisse & Sadko – Hi Scandinavia
Axwell – Nothing But Love For You
Micheal Woods – First Aid

Rising UK producer and dj Kim Fai is the latest guy who did an interview with toblip.com. He’s talking about 2010, which was his best year so far, upcoming projects and his best gigs so far. Hope you will like it.

toblip.com: First of all thank you Kim for doing this. I hope you had some good weeks off and you’re hyped for 2011 now.

Kim Fai: No problem. Yes i’m fully rested now and ready for the busy year ahead.

toblip.com: I would say 2010 was one of the best years in your life if not the best. After you released a couple of tracks in 2009 like „P.O.V.“ or „Good Life“via SIZE you did a gig with the Swedes in Brixton, supported Deadmau5 on his UK and US tour, played at festivals like Mysteryland and Tomorrowland, had your first essential mix on BBC radio 1 and you also get to know that you and your wife are going to have a daughter in 2011. How would you describe this year and what was the best impression for you?

Kim Fai: As you said it was the best year for me so far.I’m just grateful i had the opportunities to do some many amazing things. It’s surely a year i will remember forever.

toblip.com: 2011 already started with your latest release „Era/Supernova“ also on Steve’s label. What else can we expect? Will there be a track of the „new house mafia“ like Pete Tong called you, Max Vangeli and AN21?

Kim Fai: I’ve just finished a new EP for Toolroom Records which will be released soon. I’ve also done a track with AN21 & Max which will be out on their new album.

toblip.com: To get an impression of your career. Like mentioned in the essential your brother bought you 2 1210 and then you started spinning. When did you play your first venue? How „big“ was it?

Kim Fai: The first show i ever did was at my School Youth Centre. I still remember it like it was yesterday. My friend brought a huge P.A. system. The place was shaking so badly the lights fell out of the ceiling!

toblip.com: You already played in a lot of places and I know it’s hard to say what was the best but which were probably the most memorable gigs for you?

Kim Fai: Most memorable for me are probably Mansion Miami at WMC 2009, Brixton Academy with SHM & the Back 2 Back gigs me, AN21 & Max did in the Summer of 2010.

toblip.com: In the US electronic dance music is pretty big right now. As you can see in Vegas a lot of artists are playing there. How do you think about this, what is difference between good old Europe and the US when it comes to music and partying?

Kim Fai: Dance music is huge in the States right now. It’s definitely on par with Europe. These guys really know how to party.

toblip.com: A typcial question of my blog so far is what are you using for your productions? Logic I guess but what else? Did you learn playing an instrument when you were a kid?

Kim Fai: Yes i use mainly Logic for my productions. I used to play guitar when i was at High School and was in a School band! Playing lead guitar. Not many people know that.

toblip.com: A lot of djs are doing a lot of edits on tracks and I know you played a pretty nice one of DirtySouth’ „Phazing“ including the original sample. Are you a fan of mashups/bootlegs/edits and are you what is important for a good one in your opinion?

Kim Fai: I mainly do them for my sets, to surprise people. I like them if they’re done well. But some are really bad! there’s no harm in dropping a few in your sets but not ever single record.

toblip.com: If you have some days off what are the most important things for you to relax and also to recharge your batteries?

Kim Fai: When i’m at home i love relaxing by cooking some nice food, a few games on my PS3 & a good movie.
Days off on tour are mainly for catching up on emails and stuff!

toblip.com: With who would you really love to do a collaboration? No matter which genre of music the person is doing now.

KimFai: It would be cool to do something with Laidback Luke & Steve Aoki. All the Asians together! lol

toblip.com: If you wouldn’t have become a professional dj and producer what would have you been?

Kim Fai: I used to play Football [Soccer] when i was younger. If i hadn’t got into music i think that is what i would still be doing now.

toblip.com: Please tell us your top 5 tracks at the moment.

Kim Fai: Big tracks for me at the moment are:

Swanky Tunes – Avalon
Jeremy Olander – Airsteala [Dirty South Mix]
AN21, Kim Fai & MAx Vangeli – Story
Kim Fai – Nano
Kim Fai & ?????? ???? – Untitled

toblip.com: Thx Kim, I hope to see you soon somewhere in Northern Germany and maybe we can catch up then :)

Kim Fai: No problem. Be sure to see you in Germany!

Time for the first interview on toblip.com

I’m introducing you the most successful producer and dj from Finland, Heikki L.

toblip: Hey Heikki, thanks for doing this interview with me. Most of my readers – I think – don’t know that you’re in the business for many years and also had some international hits under the name of Dallas Superstars with Jaakko “JS16” Salovaara so please tell us something about you and your musical career.

Heikki L:

Yeah I am the grand old daddy of the game!
I bought my first ever decks when I was only 13 years old and then couple of years later I bought my first synthesizer and pc and I was hooked. When I was 20 years old I started a band called Moovon. It was me making the music and Mc Stii taking care of the vocals. We were signed to no less than Sony Music Finland. I remember us performing at sold out Olympic Stadion it was some kind of charity happening but it was something crazy for us.
Then I met JS16 and began to work with him. We were digging same kind of music and created few project like Hi-Tech which we signed to Ministry Of Sound (Germany) and then came Dallas Superstars. Dallas Superstars did two albums and a bunch of remixes. We were signed to Stockholm Records and there was nice hype around us.
At the same time I was working with Alex Kunnari our project name was Modulation and it was signed to Paul Van Dyk´s label Vandit. Supermodels From Paris come after all these and the only single “Keep On” was signed to Anjuna Deep and was heavily spinned by top dj´s around the globe. After all these project I thought it was time for more permanent artist name and I decided to start using my own name Heikki L (Liimatainen).

toblip: Mentioned before you’re in the business for a long time. Which is the most important record for you?

Heikki L:

Oh my Gosh, this is always the hardest question to answer… I don’t have one specific record to name but these tracks have all been very big in my life:
The KLF – Last Train to Transcentral
The Sound Design – Bounce to the Beat
The Shamen – Ebeneezer Goode
I grew up by listening all those big records by then.
During those days you didn’t have internet where you can nowadays find almost everything..so you had to listen to radio and try to catch up those new tracks from there and then order them by vinyl from London.
Oh those were the days..

toblip: One of your latest release was a remake with JS16 of “Deeper Love” originally by Aretha Franklin (1994) on Confidence, a sublabel of Spinnin. First of all in my opinion it’s a cool remake but what was your ambition of doing this?

Heikki L:

We were just jamming and playing with some new synths at JS16´s studio and came up with those big beats and that cool piano riff. Few days before that I´d been working on with a mashup where I was using Deeper Love acapella. I played it to JS16 and we found that it went from the same key than our new track so we dropped the acapella on our track and it worked really nice. Then we contacted dudes in UK and asked if they could redo the acapella so we could license the track without using that illegal acapella. They did it and we paid our ass off for that :) Actually they did really good job its so hard to tell which one is better the original or the new one.

toblip: I know that you did a new single with Something Good during the last days and that you’re working on a new remix for Sunrise Avenue. How would you describe those tracks so far and what else can we expect from you in the near future?

Heikki L:

I´ve been doing music earlier with Yotto (one half of something good) but this was the first ever time I was working with Something Good as a duo. Guys are nowadays working in the same studio as I am (HelsinkiVibe) so this thing started very naturally. I had some beats and that breakdown and both guys were digging it but I was lazy and didn’t get it further so I asked SG if they would like to take it further. They did some cool beats and added some nice chords and gave those to me and I took it from there then a bit later we sat down together and finished the track. I have to say that it became a really nice song and we definitely will do some more co-works.

Sunrise Avenue is releasing a new album soon and their first single will be “Hollywood Hills” and they asked if I could do a remix for it. This was actually the third time when they turn to me with their album opening single which is quite honoring. This time the job was a bit hard because the chorus which I intended to use started wit a major chord which is quite rare in club music but with a little help of our Helsinkivibe´s Mr chords and melodies aka Lovetone we managed to turn it to commercial house smash! Keep your eyes on Lovetone, I´m telling you he is the next Axwell from Finland!

toblip: Like mentioned in an interview I did with the guys of Something Good Finland isn’t really famous for house. How would you describe the scene in Finland?

Heikki L:

Electronic music scene in general in Finland is really small if you compare to UK or middle Europe. Our biggest thing is Rock which is sad, but I think it´s changing slowly now when those big names David Guetta and Tiesto are making house music more popular. Trance was the biggest electronic music thing a ten years ago but nowadays house music is coming strongly. I think the electro house thing was the first ever house genre which breached thru on normal night clubs here in Finland.

toblip: Where did you play so far, where would you like to play and which was the most important or your best gig?

Heikki L:

I play quite a lot around Finland. We don´t have that many “big name dj´s” here in Finland so I am kind a lucky to have a name to get some gigs around the country. We have our regular Danceteria club night once in a month also I´m playing all those bigger events like Laserpoint, Pacifique, Love etc. Also I´ve been warming up Erick Morillo, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, Pete Tong, Eric Prydz to name a few. In the future I wouldn’t mind playing more outside Finland.

toblip: What kind of equipment do you use for productions?

Heikki L:

These days I do most of my productions inside my Mac Pro. I´m a big Logic fan, been using that software something like 10 years now and its only getting better and better all the time. For recording vocals and some instruments I have Universal Audio´s pre-amp and SE Electronics Gemini II microphone they seem to work very well together. My sound interface is Apogee Ensemble which is the top of the line and I love its sound. Also I have tons of plugins but most often I use waves stuff. It´s so crazy that these days when you can do everything inside your computer..I hardly remember times when there wasn´t such a thing like softsynth, your computer was just running your midi sequencer.

toblip: There are still some djs not using earplugs while they’re playing. Do you use them? In my opinion they’re a must!

Heikki L:

Yeah offcourse I use them! I´ve been using them a looooong time. Now I´m having -9db filter which I think is the perfect when you are djing. You can still hear the music well and you don’t have to kill those monitors.
To get my work done I need me ears and I have to protect them. I have read some horror stories about tinnitus and I think its more dummies who don’t protect your ears. (Yeah Otto this one is for you..:)

toblip: A typical question but what would you have been if not a musician?

Heikki L:

I believe that I might be doing sound designing for films or something else related to audio. One other option might be doing some video stuff. I´m a creative person and I like to get things done otherwords I don´t want to be stuccoed too long time.

toblip: What are your hobbies and what is a good inspiration for you?

Heikki L:

Summertimes I like to play golf. It´s a great way to get your mind out of the work and it also helps you to control your mind. I also like travel a lot and if I end up to somewhere warm I try to do some scuba diving.

toblip: I also know that you’re running a club in Helsinki which is famous in the whole country for it’s parties. How important is running this club for you? Is it something like a motivation or an inspiration for you?

Heikki L:

I was organizing my first club nights when I was only 17 years old..We used to have those illegal ware house parties at Rauma (the small town I was born) when I moved to Helsinki I thought it would be really cool to do something similar here and then one day I met Mr A at our studio. He was working with Miika Kuisma during those days but suddenly we found ourself digging the same music and the rest is history.
So yeah nowadays I´m running a monthly house night called Danceteria with my good fellow DJ Mr A. We have been doing it now for something like 5 years. Danceteria is one the biggest club brands in Finland and we are always trying to keep it fresh. Its great when you can try your new track over there and it also helps to get connected with foreign dj´s when you book them to play at your parties.

toblip: Your recent top 5 tracks are?

Heikki L:

1. Heikki L & Something Good – Benirras
2. A.D.S.R. – Deep In The Gongo
3. Prok & Fitch – After The World
4. Rene Amesz & Jasper Clash – Tabimo
5. Story of Rapture (Heikki L Mashup)

It’s been a while so here we go.

I did an interview with Thomas Gold who recently had a couple of pretty good releases like “Marsch Marsch” on Toolroom or “Areena” on Phazing. On the 10th his newest track “AGORa” which has been supported by a lot of artists during the summer will be released on SIZE.

toblip: Hey Thomas. First of all thanks a lot for doing this interview. I’m pretty happy about it

Thomas Gold: You’re welcome, happy to be here!

toblip: Please introduce yourself and tell us how long you’re doing music right now (When/how did you start)

Thomas Gold: I’m a DJ/Producer, based in Berlin. I’m actually settled in the house/tech house genre but not limited to that; my style is also influenced a lot by minimal and progressive and also by tribal and trance music.

toblip: You’re a German DJ and producer who reached a lot during the last two years. You became a Toolroom Knights DJ, did a couple of good productions like “Shake it“ and „Everybody be somebody“ . Your latest release was „Marsch Marsch“ which is big as well. What are your influences when you’re doing a track?

Thomas Gold: I have many influences but first of all, it’s the house music itself which I always loved. I listen a lot, when I’m at home, when I go out to clubs or bars with friends or while I’m travelling. Quite often I also get my ideas and inspiration from totally different genres of music, as it was when I did ‘Marsch Marsch’ – for a long time I had the idea of doing a track with some kind of traditional marching drums in combination with house beats – and there we go…Sometimes I find new ideas when I dig deep into my sample libraries or I just sit there and play with some of my synthesizers. But I also often draw my inspiration from simply listening to music – wherever of whatever kind…

toblip: With the studio interview of FutureMusic mag you showed how you did „The Button“. How was this experience for you? I also heard you’re doing video tutorials for a German online store. How did that work out?

Thomas Gold: Yeah, working with the guys from Future music for the video was great, we all had lots of fun in my studio that day! It was my first experience of that kind, I never had done a video where I had to explain how I work, what I do with my software and how I get my sounds and tracks together.
But it was a great experience and we are about to continue this with Future Music.
And yes, I just reached an agreement with a german online store for music hard- and software. I will produce tutorial videos for some of their products (audio production soft- and hardware) which you will be able to watch online. We will start the production of the first video series end of november so stay tuned…

toblip: With „Areena“ another track you did with David Tort and David Gausa has been previewed a couple of days ago. How did that collaboration come together and what else can we expect of you in the next months?

Thomas Gold: have been in touch with my mates David & David for quite a while, we are chatting regularly, exchanging tracks and so on. One day we came up with the idea of doing a track together as we all love the same kind of house music. So I booked myself a flight to Spain and went to Barcelona to visit my buddies. We threw together some of our musical ideas we had collected before and after three days of fun and work in the studio, ‘Areena’ was done!

Currently I’m about to finish a remix for Axtone and I’m working on a couple of other exciting collaborations (will talk about those soon). Of course our next studio session with David Tort & David Gausa is being planned already so you can expect some more of our producer team as well!

toblip: Like we can see in the video you’re working with logic. What else do you need for doing your records? What is your favourite gear?

Thomas Gold: Besides Logic and a lot of software plug-ins I also use some digital and analogue outboard equipment.
As today everybody has easily access to all kind of software stuff, the sound of productions can be very similar. So in order to create my very own sound, I also invest to have good hardware. So I don´t just use the every-day Software but also some ‘special’ gear like an Universal Audio hardware compressor, the Avalon 747 Tube compressor/EQ or my analogue hardware synthesizer SE-1X (Studio Electronics). This puts me – at least I so hope ϑ- in the position to to make my productions a bit outstanding compared to the usual ‘digital software’ sound. And – I just love to tweak the ‘real’ knobs of my toys and hear the difference of the analogue gear!!

toblip: It seems that the German producers have become more and more known and respected in the house music scene during the last years. Moguai has signed to deadmau5 label mau5trap, DBN did a remix of „Tweet it“, you became part of the Toolroom Knights, just to name a few examples. How would you describe the standing of the German producers and the German scene in the whole industry?

Thomas Gold: I don’t hink that this is just a thing of now, german producers have alwas been internationally known and respected, but nowadays the german sound has really become an important part of the club music scene. I think producers here have done a lot in the past years to raise the bar for house music ‘made in germany’ – just good to see this!

toblip: You’re a in Berlin based producer and deejay. Thinking about Berlin Techno should come to everybody’s mind so how is it to live in a city with one of the biggest Techno scenes. How „big“ is house in Berlin?

Thomas Gold: Unfortunately the ‘house’ scene is not that big in Berlin – it’s more about deeper minimal, techno and techhouse sound. Berlin has it’s very own music scene which is very vivid but quite different from the rest of germany. There is an upcoming house scene, clubs are taking on this kind of music but it will just take some more time to make this more established.
But nevertheless, Berlin is a fantastic city, the music scene is so inspiring and alive, I go out to clubs to see other DJs play whenever I have time. And there’s something going on nearly every day!

toblip: What would you have become if not a musician?

Thomas Gold: Good question, haha! I used to work at the marketing department of a consumer goods company a while ago, but it didn’t really challenge me. Music is what I love and has always been what I wanted to do for life.

toblip: I’ve seen you are going to Japan in November. What was the best venue you played at?

Thomas Gold: I recently played at Pacha in Buenos Aires, that was one of my highlights this year. The club is terrific, it was totally packed and the crowd was awesome – so into the music! I just didnt realize how time went by and as I had to finish after 3.5h it was like having played for only one hour…
Another of of my favourite shows was in Brazil, in Rio De Janeiro at “The Week”. Amazing venue, thousands of people, awesome sound system and an incredible vibe! Everybody was dancing and as I stood up there in the DJ booth playing, it was hard to describe how I felt. It was just like a big long flow of music and you could not only hear, but really feel the music. That was really an amazing experience. Wicked!

toblip: 2010 comes to an end. How would you describe this year so far? What are your goals for the next months and 2011?

Thomas Gold: For me and my musical career 2010 was a musical landmark. I got signed to Toolroom Records and to Size, both my favourite labels. Then a track of mine got picked up by Dirty South for his label Phazing, so all in all this year has been amazing. I changed my production style a lot, I went a big step further concerning the quality of my productions and I made some very important and nice contacts in the club music industry.
At the moment, I’m about to finish a remix for Axtone.
For the rest of 2010, I’m planning to work on new stuff, new tracks and remixes just to be prepared for 2011!
For 2011 my personal goal is to get even better productionwise, to develop myself further and to be a part of the actual house music scene. Looking forward to that a lot!

toblip: Is there anyone out there you always wanted to do a collaboration with?

Thomas Gold: Oh, there’s not THE one but there’s lots of guys I’d just love to work with. For example it would be great to collaborate with Mark Knight or Funkagenda, I love what they do. Also Laidback Luke or Dirty South – they always have good tracks and great vocals in their productions. And there’s many others…let’ see

toblip: What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?

1- Third Party “Release”
2- Gregori Klosman – Space Banana
3- Hard Rock Sofa – Blow Up
4- Genairo Nvilla – Nvilla Anthem (Stefan Vilijn Edit)
5- Marco V – Reaver (Save The Robot Remix)

After Sebjak and Something Good I had the pleasure to do an interview with the well known Australien guys TV Rock – actually Grant of TV Rock

Hope you like it!

toblip: Hey guys. I know most of the people who are into house music know you but please tell us something about you. Where are you coming from, what are you up to?

TV Rock(Grant): We are based in Melbourne, Australia, and have been producing together for about 6 years now. Recently we have been remixing Australian vocalists Zoe Badwi and Nervo and then we collaborated with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike as well as Afrojack

toblip: I guess your most successful track was the Axwell remix of “In The Air” feat. Rudy but you’ve already been #1 in 2007 with your track “Flaunt it” feat. Seany B. in the Australian charts. In 2008 you did The Others” with the Dukes of Windsor and the big track “Been a long time” featuring Rudy. 2010 already started with “I Am Techno” on Steve Angello’s label SIZE and “Elevated” ft. Tara McDonald on Neon. What was the best track you did so far and which song does mean the most to you?

TV Rock(Grant): That’s a good question. I mean they were all important to us, Flaunt It no-one wanted to sign so I started my own label to put it out and sold 300,000 copies in Australia. It was crazy. But ‘In The Air’ really connected with people and I think that’s my favorite. Rudy and Ax are great to work with.

toblip: According to your two new releases. What elso can we expect from TV Rock in 2010?

TV Rock(Grant): We have nearly finished 3 new tracks with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike as well as one with Afrojack and another with Dave Spoon and then some other originals from us as well

toblip: How will house music in your opinion develop in the near future?

TV Rock(Grant): It’s constantly evolving. At the moment the trend is collaborations and bog hooks that almost lean towards trance, but I think with records like ‘Hey Hey’ as well, there’s room still for house music in its traditional form.

toblip: Like I know you’re just touring through Europe. Are there any gigs you definitly want to play in the near future?

TV Rock(Grant): Yeah looking forward to Tomorrowlands, an ID&T party in Europe will be dope and of course Pacha with the Swedes is a highlight

toblip: How would you describe a normal TV Rock Set?

TV Rock(Grant): It’s a lot of our own mash-ups and booty’s heaps of unreleased material and way too much grey goose… Haha it’s good times all round!

toblip:For people like me who haven’t been to OZ how would you describe the party scene in Melbourne and whole Australia?

TV Rock(Grant): It’s pretty amazing really. We have so many festivals and all of them get like 30,000 people to them in every city so it’s a really strong scene at the moment, but clubs are suffering a bit because of the festivals being so strong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecLC9p8plCM

toblip: Tell us how a normal TV Rock studio day looks like

TV Rock: We get in, figure out the job priorities and then before lunch we work on percussion and a couple of hook ideas and then after that we try to get some sort of arrangement on the go

toblip: What do you use for your productions? What kind of musical background do you have?

TV Rock: I played sax for 8 years and studied music at school and ivan is self taught but great on the keys. We use logic for our production and always the Maserati plugs for percussion… A must!

toblip: Was it your dream to become a musician?

TV Rock(Grant): I always knew I would be involved in music in some capacity

toblip: Thank you so much for the interview and all the best!
